2021/22 TLEF Block Funding to assist Faculty in transitioning to online teaching due to COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 situation, the UBCV Provost’s office redeployed $2 million dollars in funding from the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund to help support Faculties in their efforts to transition courses online and ensure high quality learning experiences for students. Faculties used this funding to hire students and staff to assist with the development of redesigned courses for remote instruction, to increase capacity for media production, and to expand teaching support in the courses that were offered by increasing the number of teaching assistants who departments hired to work with faculty in the Summer and Winter terms.

2021/22 Awarded Funding

In addition to the TLEF Block funding this year, funding was reserved to support current multi-year TLEF projects to apply for second or third year funding, as initially planned. In the 2021/22 funding round, the TLEF awarded $711,058 in renewal funding for Small TLEF Innovation and Large TLEF Transformation projects.

The 2021/22 TLEF funding round only accepted renewal applications for second or third year funding. Out of the 16 renewal applications received from the UBC Vancouver campus, 14 projects were funded.

2021/22 Faculty, Staff and Student Engagement

The TLEF actively engages with teaching and research faculty across the UBCV campus as well as support staff, who provide consultation and development support throughout the life of TLEF projects.

In 2021/22, approximately $322,000 in TLEF-awarded funding will employ approximately 37 UBC students to support the development, implementation and evaluation of TLEF projects.

2020/21 Enrolment Reach

TLEF projects funded in 2020/21 supported 22,810 students in Small TLEF Innovation projects and 6,087 students in Large TLEF Transformation projects. Overall, the projects reached 151 courses (undergraduate and graduate) and 342 sections on the UBCV campus, impacting 28,897 enrolments and 16,224 unique students.*
