Year 1: Summary | In response to advocacy from Health Authorities, the Physiotherapy Association of BC, and University of British Columbia, the Ministry of Advanced Education recently increased enrolment in the Masters of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program at UBC, doubling capacity by 2010. This will place enormous demands on clinical placement sites, which are already stretched to provide sufficient clinical learning experiences. The Department of Physical Therapy in partnership with Fraser Health is committed to a new strategy to meet student clinical learning needs by developing a student-run community clinic to serve patients with chronic conditions. This pilot will allow assessment of both community and student interest as well as allow us to gauge the feasibility of adding other professions into the program in the future. We will engage the Inter-professional Committee of the College of Health Disciplines; the vision is to promote this site as a future UBC inter-professional student-run community clinic. |

Year 2: Summary | The Department of Physical Therapy student enrollment has doubled over the last three years. This places enormous demands on clinical placement sites, which are already stretched to provide sufficient clinical learning experiences. The Department of Physical Therapy in partnership with Fraser Health began a physiotherapy student-run community clinic to serve patients with chronic conditions. This pilot began in June 2009 and has been very successful, as evidenced by student and patient feedback and a steady waitlist for service in the clinic. Initial costs to start the clinic were offset by TLEF grant funding and with its success FH has committed to continue funding the clinic on a permanent full-time basis. At this time inter-professional experiences for our students are extremely limited. To continue our vision to promote this site as a future UBC inter-professional student-run community clinic, this next phase is focused on incorporating occupational therapy students into the clinic. |
