Year 1: Summary

The Faculty of Education recently approved a re-visioned teacher education program for September 2012 which includes a new required course for all Teacher Candidates, EDUC 440, Aboriginal Education. We intend to

  1. develop a series of digital learning resources to augment content and implementation of EDUC 440;
  2. build capacity among all course instructors (approximately 20 per year) to enhance student understanding of course content and use of digital teaming resources, and;
  3. create an archive of materials and instructor/students-generated web-based resources.

In this way, all 800 (approximately) teachers who graduate from the new program in the spring of 2013 and beyond will have received a thorough education in Aboriginal topics. Through this project our goal is to respond meaningfully to the feedback summary from UBC’s Aboriginal Strategic Plan that advocates for "...the need to include Indigenous knowledge and epistemologies through the development of Aboriginal curriculum".

Year 2: Summary

The project being proposed in this application represents Year 2 of a larger TLEF project for which we received funding in 2011/2012. In Year 2 the goal of the continuing TLEF is to:

  1. Assess the contribution of these digital learning units to neady 600 Teacher Candidates’ learning by determining:
    • knowledge and skills to working with Aboriginal content, history, and perspectives; and
    • development of skills related to technology.
  2. Revise the digital learning units based on feedback from teacher candidates at the conclusion of the course.
