Year 1: Summary | The UIP will build on the successful Mining Engineering UPER Project. We developed a renewal roadmap for revitalizing and improving the Mining Engineering Program. In this next stage, we want to begin the implementation of the insights and ideas generated during the UPER project. The first stage of this work will be the integration of the 2nd year learning experience. The current 2nd year experience includes 3 separate Mining courses that do achieve course level goals but do not serve program level goals well. When we surveyed students, 37.5% said they felt lost because of the gaps in their learning when courses are taught in silos. Our plan is to break down these silos and integrate these courses around a stronger central narrative about Mining Engineering, and who is a Mining Engineer? and how they need to think and act to best serve their employers, society, and their communities. |

Year 2: Summary | The UPER Implementation Project (UIP) builds on the successful Mining Engineering UPER Project. We developed a renewal roadmap for improving the Mining Engineering Program. Therefore, we implemented MINE 2 in 2022W, an integrated experience which better addresses Program Learning Outcomes. Project Year 1 focused on building MINE 2. MINE 2 is built on a stronger central narrative about the mining lifecycle and who a Mining Engineer is. It incorporates Indigenous perspectives and knowledge. MINE 2 is therefore an “Introduction” year into the mining program, introducing important mining concepts. In year 2 of UIP, we will use the lessons and insights from the successful implementation of MINE 2 to integrate courses and learning experiences for 3rd and 4th year students. UIP, therefore, improves student learning experience through courses and assessments integration. |

In Year 2, we also revised and integrated 3rd and 4th year assessments to build a stronger central narrative. In year 3 of UIP, we will use the lessons and insights from the successful implementation of MINE 2 and MINE 293 to further enhance courses and learning experiences. We will also complete a comprehensive project and mining program evaluations through stakeholder engagement to determine opportunities for improvement. |
