Year 1: Summary

In 2004/2005 academic year, Go Global has sent close to 500 students to complete or complement their UBC degree at partner institutions around the world. This represents about 6% of the currently eligible population. To meet our Trek 2010 goal of 15% + of all UBC students graduating with an international experience, we must find ways to make the large pool of opportunities for international learning clearer, targeted and accessible; thereby strengthening the UBC learning environment.

The proposed tools will provide greater access to degree based study options, transfer credit and go global information for students, faculty and staff. As a strong level of reliable and detailed information will be widely available, Go Global Advisors, faculty members and academic advising staff will be able to work with a greater number of students and to assist in greater depth. These tools will allow for significant growth of program without significant increase in on-going salary resource while respecting faculty, student staff time and making the most of our go global resources.

Year 2: Summary

Go Global programs are an integral part of UBC's mission to "develop exceptional global citizens". In 2005/2006, Go Global will have sent 600 UBC students, about 7% of the UBC Vancouver graduating undergraduate class, to complete or complement their UBC degree at partner institutions around the world. This project, in combination with the ongoing search for mobility awards for students, will allow us to significantly surpass the existing Trek 2010 target to increase participation by 15% each year, so that by 2010, 25% of graduating undergraduates at both campuses will have participated in an international experience off-campus. The tools allow for significant growth of program while respecting faculty, student, staff time and making the most of Go Global resources.

In the first year of this project, we piloted the three tools. In year two and three, we will finalize the implementation of these tools and complete the research for each targeted degree program. For the past three years with each new partnership, Go Global has worked with the relevant faculties to identify recommended options for degree programs. Previously at UBC, partnerships were developed on a university-wide basis with little consideration to the practical aspects of identifying which programs at the partner university were the best learning options for UBC students. This project funds the research for the approx. 125 partnerships that need to be viewed with this recommended option lens. On an ongoing basis, Go Global assumes the responsibility for determining best options in new partnerships. In order to research best options for the 125 partners for the number of degree options at UBC, we require one-time funding to complete this critical work that will significantly enhance UBC students' international learning opportunities.

Year 3: Summary

This project will result in:

  1. The mapping of international learning opportunities (primarily study through student exchange but also in service learning, co-op, field studies, and research) on UBC degree programs;
  2. The final implementation of web-based tools for: a) Transfer of credit from international learning opportunities to UBC academic records and b) an online pre-departure briefing that can be deliver information on a timely basis to students, be used for any student on a program that involves an international experience and ensures that all students have access to this key and consistent information with respect to visa's, wellness and safety, cultural transitions, medical insurance, university and student responsibilities and emergency assistance.
