Project Summary | The School of Nursing graduates over 130 students a year who must meet clinical competencies requirements and Standards of Practice within a defined Scope of Practice established by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC), in order to be licensed to practice in BC. Providing optimum learning experiences to prepare our graduates to meet these requirements is highly valued in the School of Nursing and faculty are continually seeking better ways of achieving this goal. Although clinical competencies have been established by CRNBC for entry-to-practice there has not been a systematic approach within colleges and universities in Canada to level the competencies for the progressive stages of learning. Nursing students at UBC are currently using an e-portfolio previously developed by Dr. Bernie Garrett (http://clinical.nursing.ubc.ca/) with TLEF funding, and an electronic student management system to record clinical practice experiences. The student management system was developed by the IT and Nurse Practitioner teams within the School. The outcome of this project will be to expand these tools to provide a new web-based interactive system incorporating levelled clinical competencies in a user-friendly electronic format that will enable integration of the existing e-portfolio and electronic student management system. |
