Empowering Resource Based Communities

TitleEmpowering Resource Based Communities
Faculty/College/UnitLand & Food Systems
Duration1 Year
Project Summary

Globally, resource based communities are facing economic and social disruption as a result of internal and external demands on their resources, and there is little focus on providing an educational framework by which communities can address these concerns. The aim of this project is to develop with community members, municipal leaders and local organizations from Canadian and developing countries in Latin America, a post baccalaureate course that provides these communities with the platform to explore options for the sustainable use of the resources they have and, in a participatory way, develop their vision and strategy to move towards a steady-state economy. What is unique about this course is the direct involvement of communities in the development and delivery of the curriculum. Course materials will be available on campus and through web-based modules; and virtual linkages between students and communities will be facilitated through technologies such as videoconference and web tools.
