Project Summary

Grammar is an essential component of language learning and the subject of two mandatory courses for French minor and major students in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (FHIS), but Student Experience of Instruction surveys confirm the need to better support this diverse student body in their advanced learning of French.

In collaboration with students, involved both as content developers and evaluators of enhancements, this project aims to redesign and modernize FHIS’ grammar courses. This will involve a shift from a passive and prescriptive approach to an active and descriptive approach, so that French grammar teaching in FHIS becomes more inclusive and adapted to different learning profiles while considering the diversity and vitality of French, an aspect neglected by traditional grammars and yet crucial in a Canadian and multilingual context. Creating original materials available in open access and contributing to the pedagogical development of instructors will allow us to address the current issues.
