Project Summary

Student writing is key to student experience and learning across all disciplines: in their development as novice researchers, pursuit of professionalization, or community engagement. Student writing is also key to UBC initiatives that engage with EDI, anti-racism, and Indigenization (as per the Strategic and Indigenous Strategic Plans and StEAR framework). Research shows that university writing can either act as a barrier or foster student belonging, confidence, and retention. UBC itself has called for more intentional, university-wide attention to the history of writing as a tool of colonialism and its continued use in the exclusion of diverse students (AIRE). This project provides faculty with resources they can use to create inclusive writing experiences in their courses and classrooms. These resources will be developed by the co-applicants and shared with UBC faculty committed to inclusive writing instruction; those who would value ready-made resources that can easily adapt to their own teaching contexts.
