| Project Summary | Academic institutions have increasingly expressed interest in community-based learning, and a desire to engage with communities through less extractive research practices. UBC’s Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies (ACAM) program and hua foundation are working collaboratively to develop a 400-level course to provide students with formalized training and mentorship on community-based research and engagement. Building off our 2023W pilot, ACAM320J: Asian Canadian Community Organizing, the course highlights how building equitable research processes (inclusive of design, facilitation, and activation) can go beyond academic spaces to support, empower, and mobilize communities. Students will be able to develop skills and competencies that are needed for equitable community-engaged work. “Community as pedagogy” aims to scale up the course from a ‘Special Topics’ designation to a permanent 400-level offering that will be a touchstone for ACAM’s commitment in supporting community engaged research and fostering opportunities for connection and partnerships within and beyond the university. |
