Project Summary

Point of Care Testing (POCT) is a mode of testing where a patient’s bodily fluids are analyzed by a health care provider or the patient themselves without involving a clinical laboratory. In order to align with national accreditation standards and the recent changes to the pharmacists’ scope of practice announced by the BC Minister of Health on Sept 29, 2022, POCT will take a more central role in pharmacy practice decision-making and patient care.

Currently, the Entry-to-Practice (E2P) PharmD program offers limited opportunities for students to learn about POCT and its application to pharmacy practice. This project will fill this gap through the development and implementation of 6 hybrid modules that will include both the asynchronous foundational and synchronous hands-on activities. The project’s objectives include students:

  1. Developing foundational knowledge and skills in POCT.
  2. Self-reporting greater competence and confidence in conducting, interpreting and counselling patients on POCT.
