Project Summary | UBC has embarked on a mission to create an interdisciplinary culture of research in undergraduate education with a focus on Internationalism, Integration, and Information Technology. The goal of this proposal is to create an integrated model for describing how teaching and learning will change in the context of information technologies and interdisciplinarity. In YEAR 1 of this project, two initiatives were successfully completed: 1) Graduate students from the Faculty of Education worked with undergraduate students in Earth and Ocean Science, creating an interactive web site of their field experiences and made digital movies to share with other students and faculty using WebConstellations, a knowledge-building tool developed in MERLin. In YEAR 2 of this project, students will work as collaborative researchers, taking ownership over their own knowledge building. They will maintain, and modify the web sites, adding valuable knowledge to the curriculum while investigating the meaning of interdisciplinarity. Our mission is to enable students in Education and Science, and eventually in other faculties, to document their learning experiences and design on-line digital media objects which relate to and extend the subjects they are studying. We think this project is an essential component in the design of a knowledge-based community. |
