|Title||Project Integrated Program (PIP)|
The Project Integrated Program (PIP) is a new approach to engineering education, and is unique in Canada. PIP was introduced, on an experimental bases to half of the Second Year Class (70 students) in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999-2000. Indications are that PIP is a resounding success and should be continued.
The goals of PIP are to:
Emphasis is on an integrated understanding of Electrical and Computer Engineering principles, and on being able to design practical applications of those principles. The move is away from passive lectures towards group-based learning and project work. The UBC PIP Program includes 23 credits of course work presented as an integrated unit by a team of five faculty members and support Teaching Assistants. The experience of the inaugural year has shown that if the program is to be viable on a continuing basis, a dedicated laboratory teaching staff is essential.
