Duration | 2 Year |
Initiation | 04/01/2020 |
Project Summary | The proposed pilot would provide an opportunity to test and develop an entirely new curricular opportunity for students in the Juris Doctor (JD) program at UBC, the first to be developed in partnership with an Indigenous community, the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs. Students would be involved in helping address Gitanyow priorities for the continued use, articulation and revitalization of Gitanyow laws in the wake of colonialism, through a place-based research experience. It would offer students a for-credit program comprised of: (a) methodological training on Indigenous laws and community-based research, with content specific to the identified project(s) with the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs; (b) an intensive land-based research experience on the Gitanyow Territories; (c) the opportunity to work on concrete research deliverables developed in partnership with the Gitanyow Chiefs and to present these to the Gitanyow membership; and (d) mentorship in Indigenous legal research by both Allard faculty and Gitanyow Chiefs. |
