Project Summary | Objectives: There are two main objectives to the outreach program. The first objective provides senior high school students with information about health science programs so as to allow them to form well-grounded decisions about their post-secondary education and future careers. This generates awareness of the wealth and flexibility of health science program options offered at UBC, and communicates the exciting directions of development within each area of the health sciences in terms of academic research and jobs. As well, it will promote the concept of the interprofessional and interdisciplinary work, which are important and inevitable among health science professionals. Secondly, the High School Outreach program gives current UBC students the-opportunity to interact with other students in different disciplines. This allows the volunteers to network resources, form lines of communication between the health science disciplines, and gives them the means to create and give talks to promote their field of study. Rationale: We believe that students applying to university should be aware of all the options that are available to them, and should clearly understand what different programs entail. At present, many university applicants have goals and ideals without real knowledge on which to base their decisions. A great majority of those who pursue sciences often aim for medicine or dentistry, not realizing that there are numerous other alternatives in health sciences that may actually suit their interests and abilities even more so. This needs to be changed by presenting them with information, and giving them student perspective. With respect to the UBC student volunteers, it is our belief that by creating a forum for communication between the health science disciplines, students will attain a greater understanding of how the many disciplines are integrated in the professional health science community. |
