Project Summary

The Thunderbird Online Media Project involves the creation of a student-run online publication - the only one of its kind in Canada - devoted to media issues, criticism and developing new models of journalism. The objectives for the project are fourfold:

  1. To promote an innovative, interactive student-centred learning environment that will enhance our curriculum and provide our students with hands-on new media experience.
  2. To assist students and faculty in The School of Journalism to maintain and build their skills and intellectual understanding in various media in order to stay current within the marketplace.
  3. To provide a vehicle  to present student and faculty interdisciplinary research as well as departmental research, which is focused on new media, in a compelling and timely manner.
  4. To promote the development of a high-quality online publication that represents the school and the University of British Columbia to a worldwide audience.

The rationale behind the Thunderbird Online Media Project is to encourage thoughtful dialogue about new media and its relation to traditional media. The publication, which is operating on an experimental basis, is a mixture of news stories, analysis, opinion and creative non-fiction about a wide range of topics from the local to international level.
