Project Summary | Objectives:
Rationale: It is well recognized that the ability to find and use information effectively is crucial for inquiry-based, life-long learning. The Chapman Learning Commons (CLC) opening in Main Library in January 2002 will support the learning of these skills, by providing appropriate hardware/software, one-on-one help and hands-on workshops. CLC staff will co-ordinate many aspects of the Library's existing information literacy programs, working closely with librarians in Library branches. At the same time, learning support is growing substantially throughout UBC, in facilities close to particular user populations. Several faculties have some kind of learning commons or educational technology centre supporting faculty and students. Off-campus, the Learning Exchange has begun to provide access to the Library's electronic information resources and services, for courses such as Science 101, agencies in the neighbourhood and other members of the community. These support units present new needs and opportunities for library instruction. By integrating our efforts with other support units, the Library hopes to strengthen the fabric support for learning and information technologies across the university. |
