|Soilweb: A Tool for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Soil Science

Objective: To develop a web-based interactive tool (SoilWeb) for SOIL 200 - Introduction to Soil Science course (both on-campus and online Distance Education Technology -DET versions). The proposed tool will (1) enhance connectivity of material covered, (2) allow for inclusion of a greater variability of learning styles, and (3) provide links between material covered in this undergraduate soils course and research carried out by various faculty members at UBC and research institutions in BC and Canada.
Rationale: Material covered in SOIL 200 is extremely diverse, ranging from basic principles of physics, chemistry, and biology to management applications in agriculture, forestry, and environmental protection. The SoilWeb tool will be used to support the lecture-based and WebCT teaching methods providing students with a graphical, interactive, and text web-based information to help them learn how to make connections among a large number of concepts and relate them to various soil management issues. This is not an easy task for students in a basic soils course and the proposed tool will help students to bring concepts together. The SoilWeb will serve as in-class and off-campus resource and review tool, and will strengthen initiative of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences to integrate information technology (IT) into teaching.
