Project Summary

Objective: To compile dietician-endorsed web-based learning resources to support the practice-based component of dietetics education.

Rationale: The UBC Dietetics Major has been revised to incorporate the fieldwork component necessary for students to graduate as practice-ready professionals. Beginning in 2006, year 5 of the program will consist of professional practice courses involving 38 weeks of field placements in health care settings across BC. Placements will be arranged at large teaching hospitals and smaller sites not currently involved in hosting students. By creating a repository of web-based resources, students, regardless of placement location, will have equal access to resources necessary for acquiring entry-level knowledge and skills for dietetic practice.

Methods: An Advisory Group with student representation will oversee the project. Focus groups will be conducted in each BC Health Authority with dietitians in all areas of practice to obtain input into the resources needed to support dietetic practice education. A framework will be established for selecting, organizing, posting, and maintaining resources. Resources will be gathered from the more than 300 dietitians in BC involved as preceptors/mentors. Once the resources are obtained and posted, they will be evaluated by dietitians and students. and revised accordingly. This project also includes the development of an evaluation strategy and a plan for keeping the resources up-to-date, once they are in use (2006 and beyond).
