|Implementation of Internet Based Videoconferencing in Distance Nursing Education
New technologies have consistently transformed the way we teach and learn. The merging of technologies with the way we communicate, collaborate and interact within a learning environment is particularly exciting. With the availability of new interactive video communication technologies there is a need to establish the most effective use of this medium to support distance learners in the same way that we interact with students in face-to-face classrooms.
Traditionally learners at a distance have linked with teachers and each other in asynchronous online environments using email and online course tools such as discussion forums. Although this can provide a 'sense' of sharing the existing synchronous text based 'chat rooms' offer limited opportunity for non-verbal communication between participants which create limitations in building on ideas, using, sharing and creating knowledge and present challenges for educators and for students.
A fundamental goal of this proposal is to explore the application of digital network videoconferencing technologies to support distance learning environments for nursing education and in particular to assess how the technology can be employed most effectively as a teaching tool and contribute to effective learning environments for distance learners. Specifically the project will explore applications of technologies that optimize collaboration and interactive forms of online learning including web-conferencing and application sharing, videoconferencing with presentation, and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and application sharing. Although newly emerging, integrated software for phone, video and presentation/document sharing using the internet will also be explored.
