Project Summary

The PBL component of the undergraduate laboratories will be expanded through the introduction of a novel research-centered form of PBL (RPBL) that would entail the use of cases developed around research problems that are being actively investigated in the Department of Physiology. These cases will be designed to integrate and enhance materials presented in the existing lectures and laboratories, to develop student understanding of the scientific process, to expose students to current research in the department- all through the interactive learning format of PBL.

Implementation of RPBL depends on the availability of cases that are tailored to achieve these mentioned goals. Therefore, we propose that a bank of new research-centered cases be developed through collaboration between a graduating 4th-year Honours student and a faculty member and investigators from the Department of Physiology in order to meet these needs. Since the majority of the members of the department's faculty already have experience and training in PBL facilitation in the Medical and Dental Undergraduate Curriculum at UBC, there is no stipulation for tutor training for initiating this project.
