Project Summary

The Asian Library in collaboration with UBC Library, Interlibrary Loans Division proposes to initiate a project to provide UBC students with improved access to information services and scholarly resources not available in North America or through traditional interlibrary loan agreements by setting up a pilot program which would work with institutions in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. UBC is currently offering 50 Chinese Studies courses and more have been proposed for next year. The Asian Library is dealing with increasingly complex reference requests coming from 15 faculties and schools and Interlibrary Loans is sometimes unable to fulfill requests for material through traditional agreements which focus primarily on North American libraries. We propose to address these challenges by initiating a virtual reference project with institutions in China. This project would involve hiring and training graduate students to route locally unresolved questions to partners in China. The project would also hire and train students with language capabilities to work in Interlibrary Loans for the delivery of material from China and Taiwan to students needing the resources. The long term goal will be to establish protocols for interlibrary lending with institutions in China and Taiwan and to establish ongoing virtual reference collaborations with Asian partners.
