|Title||A Virtual Laboratory for Mechanical Engineering Design (Design V-Lab)|
To establish a Virtual Laboratory for Design (Design V-Lab) that will support the teaching of design methodologies in 3rd-year mechanical engineering, promote greater integration between the core design courses and enable team-based learning and collaboration within the department and with other universities and industry. The V-Lab will expose 120 students each year on average to state-of-the-art Computer-Aided Design and Engineering (CAD/CAE) technology structured to assist in teaching the principles of mechanical design.
The ultimate objective is to provide industry with designers who are equipped with the essential characteristics and skills required in real-life situations (e.g. teamwork, communication skills, design process, feel for space and relationships of objects, planning and scheduling, etc.). Design "Wizards" integrated with CAD applications, CAE simulation and analysis tools, and on-line catalogues and codes will be developed and integrated for mechanical component design for real engineering applications.
