Year 1: Summary

We believe it is important for people with chronic conditions and other 'expert patients' to be engaged in the education of health professional students. We will build on past projects to create a template for a Community Centre for Health Professional Education (CCHPE). We aim to learn, by participatory action research, how to create long term and trusting partnerships with patient organizations that result in community-led educational programs. This will promote patient-centred interprofessional practice by our students and provide new teaching and learning resources for all health professional programs at UBC. Expected outcomes are: i) a tested model for interprofessional education provided in partnership with community organizations to be offered as an elective; ii) a virtual CCPHE through a website that includes a toolkit of practical resource documents; iii) proposals for next steps to consolidate and sustain a community-campus partnership for health professional educational activities through a real CCHPE.

Year 2: Summary

With TLEF support we are laying foundations for a Community Centre for Health Professional Education (CCHPE). We aim to learn, by participatory design, how to create long term and trusting partnerships with patient organizations that result in community-led educational programs. This will promote patient-centred interprofessional practice by our students and provide new teaching and learning resources for all health professional programs at UBC. Expected outcomes of the second year of this initiative are: i) sustainable interprofessional student-centred learning activities provided in partnership with community organizations; ii) a model for patient-led educational activities in credit-based courses; iii) enhanced resources on the virtual CCPHE website; iv) a 'Patient Fair' to facilitate networking between faculty, students and patient organizations; v) initiation of the implementation of the CCHPE strategic plan.

Year 3: Summary

Our vision is a Community Centre for Health Professional Education. With TLEF support we have laid foundations for this Centre. We have successfully created long term and trusting partnerships with patient and community organizations that have resulted in community-led educational programs, developed through a process of participatory design. Evaluation of 6 workshops with 79 students from 10 health professions, 7 community organizations, 23 community teachers and 9 faculty has confirmed benefits to all participants.

Expected outcomes from the 3rd year of this initiatives are: i) a variety of patient-led educational activities embedded into credit-based courses at UBC; ii) an organization (e.g. charitable foundation) for Community Partnerships for Health Professional Education that brings together community organizations committed to providing patient-led educational programs to UBC.
