Project Summary

This proposal describes two significant enhancements to CHEM 123: Physical and Organic Chemistry. The first is the creation of a Chemistry Integrated Resource Package (ChIRP) and the second is a curriculum revision to better combine the two unnecessarily disparate topics of the course. CHEM 123 serves over 1500 students each winier term, and is often the first introduction students have to organic chemistry. This project has been spurred by the creation of a ChIRP in the first term general chemistry course, CHEM 121 (TLEF funded 2008-2010). The expected outcomes for CHEM 123 students are a deeper understanding of physical and organic chemistry topics and the connections between them, improved long-term retention of key concepts, and improved attitudes and beliefs towards learning chemistry. Thus, this project will benefit many UBC students over the course of their degree programs.
