Project Summary

Pharmacy is among the many health professional training programs in Canada that has adopted a competency-based education (CBE) framework. A hallmark of CBE is the practice and demonstration of a set of specific skills, behaviours, and knowledge by trainees in authentic care environments. However, student learning is highly context-specific and it is unclear how pharmacist competencies are judged across the two predominant, but distinct, experiential training settings of community (outpatient) and hospital (inpatient) pharmacy. This clarification is especially important for UBC's Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program which has recently increased its class enrolment and more than doubled the length of these workplace-based learning requirements in the curriculum. In this project we are seeking to determine both the trainee experiences and the practice educator expectations across these two contexts to help better prepare students joining these practice settings. We will also identify areas where consistency of competency interpretations among assessors can be improved.
