Year 1: Summary

Graduates of the Midwifery Program at UBC must acquire clinical and professional competencies standardized by the International Confederation of Midwives, the College of Midwives of BC, and Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium. Students are placed with midwives and physicians across the province and internationally to gain clinical experiences. There are no existing systematic and efficient methods of assessing and applying progress in clinical learning in preparation for Canadian midwifery practice. TLEF funding will support the development of an evidence-based process for clinical placement assignments.

A Midwifery Electronic Learning Management System will help to document and match the evaluation of levelled student clinical competencies to specific characteristics of preceptors and sites. Students, faculty and preceptors will benefit from greater ease in tracking and evaluating clinical experiences, regardless of location. Ready access to data will enable faculty to address individual learning needs when effecting subsequent placements or confirming eligibility for promotion to higher level experiences.

Year 2: Summary

TLEF funding is supporting the development of an evidence-based process for enhancing the acquisition of clinical and professional competencies required for midwifery practice. Clinical learning occurs in hospitals, clinics, and client homes, in locations that can be urban, rural or remote. This electronic system (MELMS) will provide students, faculty, and preceptor tools that are accessible and facilitate learning. In Phase 2, we will develop functionality to:

  • facilitate the ability of students and faculty to create dynamic learning plans, integrating data from the clinical experience database including level of mastery attained for each competency;
  • provide faculty with aggregate data on time and frequency of exposure necessary for skill acquisition;
  • provide a student resource for detailed clinical placement site information; and
  • incorporate and adapt the UBC Mobile Clinical e-portfolio to the Midwifery education context.

We will also develop a user guide and orientation workshops to assist students and faculty to utilize the MELMS features most effectively to support student learning.
