Year 1: Summary | As the university seeks to reach the target of 30% of UBC students learning from and participating in an international opportunity, an increased number of students will participate in international service learning (ISL). UBC’s goal is to ensure quality at the same time as reaching aggressive targets, It is critical that we go to scale on international service learning with a clear understanding of how to best support student learning and international community partners. To be more certain of these outcomes, we require opportunity to set a standard for student learning and community engagement. This will allow us to reach our goals to develop and expand quality learning opportunities for students and, inevitably, enhance our institutional reputation internationally within grassroots community organizations. This project will create systems, capacity, and tools for the purpose of assessing student learning outcomes in ISL, to ultimately enhance this pedagogy in UBC courses. As was a priority for UBC’s domestic CSL, growth of the ISL program must be undertaken with our own informed research as well as best practice and evidence from others around the world. |

Year 2: Summary | As the university seeks to reach the target captured in Place and Promise and the International Strategic plan - 30% of UBC students learning from and participating in an international opportunity - an increased number of students will participate in international service learning (ISL). It is critical that we go to scale on international service learning with a clear understanding of how to best support student learning and international community partners. Year 3: Summary | As the university seeks to reach the target of 30% of students learning from an international opportunity there will be an increase in participation in international service learning (ISL). Since the first TLEF submission, more and more Faculties have integrated ISL into specialized courses and programs such as the Arts Research Course Abroad Award Program (ARCMP) and the new International Nutrition major in LFS, reinforcing the need for systems, capacity and tools to assess student learning outcomes in ISL. UBC’s goal is to ensure quality while reaching aggressive targets. It is critical that further growth in ISL be achieved with a clear understanding of how to best support student learning and international community partners. To be more certain of these outcomes, we require opportunity to set a standard for student learning and community engagement. This will allow us to reach our goals to develop and expand quality learning opportunities. |
