Project Summary

We propose an intensive, innovative program for UBC and non-UBC opera students, which includes language courses tailored to opera students and the opportunity to apply and enhance their learning by taking part in two opera productions. The program will be unique in Canada and could attract numbers of Canadian and international students to UBC. This pilot project would lay the foundations of, and contribute to comprehensive planning of an evidence-based UBC Summer Language and Opera School, to be launched in 2015. Funding for further development and revision will be sought in 2014, before the program launch in 2015. The objectives of this pilot project include the development and implementation of two specialized language courses (French and German) and a course on principles of acting and dance/stage movement, the development of online materials for the existing Italian 102 for Opera course, and consultation and engagement with students and opera community.
