| Year 1: Summary | Instructor’s feedback is a corrective and constructive pedagogy that helps students identify mistakes and adjust their practices accordingly (e.g., giving comments on essay writing or correcting foreign language pronunciation). Feedback can be given either in-person or through an online tool, but the different modes of feedback have distinct benefits. In face-to-face, voice and gesture convey nuanced and complex ideas effectively; online tools enable flexible scheduling and self-paced review. To bring the best of the both worlds into UBC courses, this project aims to import and deploy RichReview, a speech- and gesture-based commenting system, to this campus. RichReview offers two beneficial features that existing voice commenting tools (e.g., CLAS, VoiceThread, etc.) cannot offer, but are critical for giving effective feedback: animated visual pointer, and fast speech browsing. The pedagogical efficacy of RichReview will be evaluated in courses in both the Faculty of Science and Arts with potential for broader application. |

| Year 2: Summary | This project aims to import and deploy RichReview to UBC campus. RichReview is a speech- and gesture- based online commenting tool the principal applicant developed and tested in Cornell University. A series of deployments shown that using RichReview helps instructors convey to students nuanced and complex ideas using its face-to-face-like voice-and-gesture expressions. RichReview also offers two beneficial features that existing voice commenting tools (e.g., CLAS, VoiceThread, etc.) cannot offer, but are critical for giving effective feedback: animated visual pointer and fast speech browsing. To bring these benefits to courses at the UBC campus, we should migrate the system to the Canadian infrastructure. Also, the efficacy of RichReview needs to be demonstrated to UBC instructors. Year 1 integrates RichReview to UBC’s technical infrastructure. Year 2 evaluates the pedagogical efficacy of RichReview in courses in both the Faculty of Science and Arts with the potential for broader application. |
