Year 1: Summary

The aims of the project are: (1) to develop a new online visual learning tool; (2) to pilot this new tool in two courses of different size and level; and (3) to develop documentation materials to promote uptake of this new tool across UBC.

The new Image Annotation Tool allows instructors to build and share databases of course-specific images, which communities of learners can then engage with through textual commentaries, visual markings, tags, and media-rich annotations in space. By actively creating new layers of information and interpretation, students and teachers can debate visual materials in a deeper, more interactive, and recordable form than existing models and platforms allow.

This project builds on a previous TLEF headed by Tara Mayer, which has shown the limitations of both open-source and proprietary commercial platforms. In consultation with CTLT and ArtsISIT, this project will develop an in-house solution based on an existing UBC platform.

Year 2: Summary

The aim of this project is to develop a new online visual learning tool that will facilitate collaborative and critical student engagement with visual materials.

In Year 1 (2018/19) of this project, we have developed and piloted a new in-house platform created at UBC. In Year 2 (2019/20), we will make necessary technical improvements (to both student-interface and instructor back-end) based on the evaluation of those pilots, involve faculty beyond Arts in further development, and prepare user documentation for instructors and students in preparation for a roll-out across campus.
