Project Summary | AI can either be seen as a vampire, draining the work of authentic writers to churn out derivative content, or, as an exciting collaborator opening new creative possibilities. Regardless, creative writing students must engage with it. Understanding AI's ethical shortcomings, creative potential, and how it shapes the relationship between form and content is critical as this new media evolves. This project lets students work with GenAI in an immersive VR space (a madcap "funhouse") to create procedural poetry, or poetry built on algorithms and processes. The Funhouse draws inspiration from rule-breaking, experimental Vancouver poets from the 1960s and 70s; people like Judith Copithorne, Bill Bissett, and Lionel Kearns, and from the Oulipo and Dada movements. In this wild and creative spirit, we want to challenge both the traditional definitions of poetry and the assertive compositional claims of AI, focusing students' attention on creative exploration over results. Welcome to the Funhouse! |
