Project Summary | Building upon UBC forest growth and yield model research and the Forest Vegetation Simulator-British Columbia (FVS-BC), the proposed project will create a set of exercises to enhance teaching and learning in several UBC courses. The exposure to available modelling and decision-making tools in exercises is often limited in undergraduate courses due to lack of computer lab access and difficulties in providing technical support for students. Each module will include tasks that are based on prepared FVS-BC models and model output. Students first learn how to use the model output for decision-making without the technological barriers to the implementation of FVS-BC. In upper-level courses they learn to run FVS-BC themselves. Each module is designed by a faculty member who has relevant expertise (e.g., silviculture, forest economics, forest policy, fire and fuels), while support is provided by the forest biometrics/modelling faculty for the implementation of the model simulations. |
