Project Summary | The UBC Centre for lntercultural Communication (CIC), a division of UBC Continuing Studies, proposes to create a campus-wide intercultural advising, consultation and training program and web-based resource for faculty and staff. The overarching objective of this project is to strengthen the capacities of staff, faculty working with UBC students, to build their intercultural awareness, knowledge and skills, ultimately supporting UBC in moving from being a multicultural campus inhabited by people from different cultures to an intercultural campus where staff and faculty and students regularly interact, engage and truly draw upon each others diverse knowledge and experience. Through our recent work with a number of different departments, it has been clear that many busy faculty and staff members feel that large group workshops are not always comfortable venues to deal with the sensitive questions and puzzles of intercultural interactions in the classroom or the office. We propose to work with individuals and small groups to address specific departmental questions and concerns related to developing intercultural competence at UBC. This proposed project would be a way of proactively meeting these increasing needs. This project has been developed in consultation with colleagues at Teaching and Academic Growth and in the UBC Equity Office. |
