Project Summary

The focus of this TLEF application is CRWR 200: Introduction to Creative Writing. The course is open to all undergraduate students and offers a hands-on introduction to multiple genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenplay, stage play, graphic forms, lyric forms, children's literature, and writing for new media. This large open-enrolment course is offered in both online asynchronous and in-person synchronous modalities and serves over 1500 students per academic year. For many students, CRWR 200 is their first and sometimes only creative writing course. Through a small TLEF, we hope to assess and improve student accessibility by implementing a hybrid delivery for the course, implementing online components to harness deeper experiential learning, additionally implementing place-based pedagogy focusing on UBC’s strategic plan, as well as to enrich the course as a key site of professional development for our many graduate TAs for whom this course offers a first teaching experience.
