UBC School of Kinesiology: Implementation of a Clinical Exercise Physiologist Pathway

Objective: The BC Ministry of Health recently recommended the hiring of Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs; e.g., kinesiology graduates with specialized certification) in healthcare settings, signalling an increase in employment opportunities for our kinesiology degree students. Recent curriculum mapping identified that our current kinesiology degree program provides 71% coverage of competencies required to certify as a CEP. This project aims to address missing competencies and support faculty to use pedagogical best practices to teach these professional and skill-based competencies.

Expected outcomes: Our students will have a defined pathway for pursuing a career as a CEP and broaden their scope of employment opportunities post-graduation. Students will get access to online modules and three new clinical instructor-led courses to learn contemporary exercise professional competencies. Faculty, staff, and teaching assistants will have increased opportunities to learn skill-based pedagogies that can be brought to their existing classrooms.
