Project Summary | Academic institutions have increasingly expressed interest in community-based learning, and a desire to engage with communities through less extractive practices. UBC’s Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies program and hua foundation are working collaboratively to develop an upper-level undergraduate course to provide students with formalized training and mentorship on community-based research and engagement. Building off our 2023W pilot, ACAM320J: Asian Canadian Community Organizing will enhance students' understanding of how equitable research processes can go beyond academic spaces to support, empower, and mobilize communities. Students will also develop skills and competencies that will prepare them for equitable work with communities beyond their time at UBC. “Community as pedagogy” aims to explore possibilities for scaling this course from a ‘Special Topics’ designation to a permanent 400-level offering that will be a touchstone for the ACAM curriculum, which centres around community engaged research and fostering opportunities for connection within and beyond the university. |
