Project Summary

In September 2023 the Bachelor of Arts Major in Urban Studies (BAUS) welcomed its first cohort of students. Community-engaged learning (CEL) is a central pillar of the BAUS curriculum, which culminates in a year-long community-engaged Capstone. We seek TLEF support to operationalize a key phase of the BAUS CEL strategy: “Ensure core [community engagement] competencies are obtained before capstone.” We propose to design, pilot and implement a “Capstone Onboarding” module. This module will convene students, faculty, staff and community partners involved in Capstone for a series of community engagement skills workshops, and conversations about partnership values and priorities. After evaluating outcomes, we will refine it into a model for subsequent Capstones and make other relevant BAUS curriculum improvements. This project is an essential part of our broader BAUS CEL strategy, and will ensure that BAUS students, faculty and staff are equipped to meaningfully, responsibly, and effectively engage with community partners.
