Project Summary

Suicide is an ongoing health crisis in Canada, with an underestimated average of 10 lives lost each day. For every life lost there are devastating impacts to individuals and communities. Although trusted and available health care professionals, pharmacists are not routinely trained in suicide prevention and therefore represent a potential missed opportunity to identify and support those at risk. Through pharmacy-specific suicide prevention training, delivered in a safe and supportive environment, we will increase the conversation about suicide, contribute to stigma reduction, and improve patient safety. Through evaluation and dissemination of project effectiveness and safety, we aim to embed suicide prevention training in Pharmacy curricula at UBC and beyond.

Pharmacists will be knowledgeable about suicide, confident to identify those at risk, able to initiate a conversation, provide referrals, and support those affected by suicide. We will apply this learning to create best practices in teaching other potentially triggering psychiatry topics.
