Project Summary

As society broadens its understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE), its healthcare institutions should reflect this growth. Today’s healthcare professionals must develop knowledge of gender diversity, sexual orientation and associated experiences, histories, and language to provide quality patient care. This project integrates SOGIE throughout the four-year E2P PharmD curriculum to build LGBTQ+ competencies amongst pharmacy students and prepare future pharmacy graduates to provide quality patient care to LGBTQ+ communities. This project will:

  1. Scaffold SOGIE in mandatory courses: PHRM 100/270/441.
  2. Embed SOGIE into integration activities across PY1-3.
  3. Pilot a PY3 elective course (PHRM 300E) that examines the historical and contemporary contexts of LGBTQ+ health.
  4. Build capacity with community partners by launching PHRM 473 LGBTQ+ community-engaged (CEL) learning practicums.
  5. Establish the Queer Curriculum Advisory Committee, which invites members of LGBTQ+ communities, student body and University to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of (1)-(4).
