AMS Tutoring Service

Academics are central to university life. Recognizing that many students require some learning assistance to achieve their academic goals, AMS Tutoring provides academic support through peer mentorship. In fact, many students have commented that they like our service because “students do the tutoring”. Since the transition from high school to university can be difficult, first year students are our primary focus. Our tutors are a team of undergraduate and graduate students who benefit from this mentorship program by developing their job skills and exploring their interests. During interviews, many of our tutors expressed an interest in teaching at either the secondary or post-secondary level.

While the program has seen a great deal of success over the past year, it has the potential to help a larger number of students. The most frequent comment on the student feedback surveys is “More Tutors!!!” as many students feel there are “Too few tutors for many students.” Lengthening the hours of our service and making more tutors available to help students will help solve this problem. We would also like to improve our service by diversifying the number of subjects we tutor and the number of programs we offer to help students achieve academic success. Greater funding will allow us to meet these goals without compromising our existing and beneficial programs.
