| Project Summary | The objective of the proposal is to establish a new Integrated Science Program Course, ISCI 411. The topic area of the course will be the field of risk assessment. The rational for the proposal comes form two sources. First, our initial investigation of faculty interest found broad support for an undergraduate course in risk assessment on campus. Second, the Integrated Sciences Program which is growing rapidly, needs to offer additional courses so that students can complete the nine credits in three integration courses (ISCI) required for their degree. A course in risk is by nature integrative, and is well suited to multidisciplinary teaching and to group projects that are mainstays of ISCI courses. The course would reflect risk assessment research being done at UBC, linking research and teaching. This research is found in many units, for example, the EcoRisk Research Unit in School of Community and Regional Planning; health risk research in Occupational Hygiene, in statistical and probability research done in Statistics and Mathematics and in policy analysis in Commerce. If funding is successful, the course will be developed over the 2000/01 academic to be available for January 2001. The course would be open enrollment, so that ISP and other students could enroll. |
