The Centre for International Indigenous Studies – Education Program

Objectives: First Nations Legal Studies at the Faculty of Law has received formal faculty approval to expand into a centre that will increase access to legal education for students, academics and indigenous communities on local and global levels. This Centre for International Legal Studies (CILS) has five objectives:

1. To enhance student learning and promote scholarly research in the area of Indigenous legal issues.
2. To expand the base of international Indigenous legal knowledge (laws, customs, traditions, values and oral histories).
3. To improve the access of Indigenous students and communities to traditional and mainstream legal knowledge.
4. To assist Indigenous communities in their efforts to develop legal strategies, alternative models of justice and governance, and to protect and assert their right to self-determination.
5. To gather Indigenous legal knowledge for the CILS archive.
