Year 1: Summary | UBC Dentistry emphasizes an inquiry-based pedagogical approach and follows competency-based education (CBE) ideology. In all educational programs, a sound assessment system helps to achieve the program curricular philosophy. As a part of our curricular renewal and a strong desire to create a holistic CBE program, we propose to introduce a Progress Test System (PTS) to augment our curricular renewal project. Via and interactive, online, four-year continuum of progress tests, students will be assessed on the expected competencies of a new graduate dentist. This system emphasizes the use of an interactive web-based feedback tool where students will complete progress tests, receive immediate formative feedback, engage in online discussion groups, and be directed to specific areas for improvement/remediation. We intend the PTS to encourage self-directed learning and reduce the challenges inherent in scheduling faculty/student face time for providing feedback. Multiple means will be employed to evaluate the intended outcomes of this project. |

Year 2: Summary | As a part of our curriculum renewal and the desire to achieve the CBE philosophy, with support from TLEF in 2014-2015, we designed a Progress Test System (PTS) that will be piloted in Spring 2015. A successful result from the pilot will advise a full implementation of PTS to augment our curriculum renewal project. Via an Interactive, online, four-year continuum of progress tests, students will be assessed on the expected competencies of a new graduate dentist. Our PTS emphasizes an interactive-web-based feedback tool where students will: complete progress tests, receive immediate formative feedback, engage in online discussion groups, and be directed to specific areas for improvement /remediation. Multiple means will be employed to evaluate intended outcomes of this project. |

Year 3: Summary | As a part of our curriculum renewal and a strong desire to achieve the competency-based-education philosophy, and with support from TLEF in the past two years, we began to build a Progress-Test-System (PTS) that was implemented in September 2015. In the twice-a-year, four- year continuum of progress surveys/tests, students are assessed on the expected competencies of a new graduate dentist. The pilot has been conducted, and now we intend to augment the PTS’ feedback system via building an interactive, web-based platform that can build a more sustainable assessment system. The third year project will focus on building an interactive-web-based feedback tool where students will: receive timely, formative feedback, engage in online discussion groups, and be directed to specific areas for improvement /remediation. Multiple means will be employed to evaluate intended outcomes of this project. |
