Year 1: Summary

UBC’s 2018 draft Indigenous Strategic Plan emphasizes collaboration and equal partnerships as a “defining feature of Indigenous engagement at the university”. Our proposal speaks directly to this by building a curriculum co-development program that will culminate in a new UBC graduate course.

This new course, “Co-producing Aquatic Science”, will be housed in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) newly established Indigenous Fisheries Research Unit. Led by IOF co-applicants, it is a response to student requests for formal training on effective modes for partnering with Indigenous communities to co-produce science.

Co-development programming will be accomplished through two university-based workshops with community partners (students/youth, leaders, Elders) and two experiential learning activities for UBC students. Outcomes from these activities will identify both challenges and opportunities that arise from university–community partnerships and inform the implementation of reciprocal and respectful community-university engagement at UBC.

Our proposal speaks directly to this focus and numerous Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Actions (e.g., 10.iii, 62.ii, 63.iii) by building a curriculum co-development program that will culminate in a new graduate course on Co-producing Aquatic Science.

This course will be housed in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, designed in response to student desire for formal training on effective modes of partnering with Indigenous communities. Curriculum co-development will be carried out at UBC and within an Indigenous community. At UBC, we will focus on cross-campus networking to leverage existing programming and implement a survey to assess educational needs. Within the Indigenous community, work will focus on building strong relationships and assessing community needs. Both activities will culminate in workshops to set reciprocal tenets of the new UBC course.
