Year 1: Summary | This collaborative initiative, between the Faculty of Applied Science (FAS), Student Services (SS), the Library (L) and IT Services (ITS), aims to create a single, user-centred interface to learning information. This interface will provide rapid on-demand access to individually relevant information for each student registered for a UBC program of study within the Faculty of Applied Science. A successful outcome will result in a template for future university-wise adoption, moving us a step closer to our goal to “Fully integrate information technology with instruction in all areas.” Across the University, a vast quantity of quality student resource material relating to academic study is available. This material can be obtained through a number of independent sources. Access to this information is dependent on the student or instructor knowing what information they want, knowing that it exists and then knowing where to find it. The objective of this project is to provide a single integrated web-based ‘portal system’ called myUBC that presents both students and instructors with relevant information based on their individual profile. This will be supported by a set of authoring and maintenance tools together with the underlying software framework necessary for enabling the information to be seamlessly presented to the user, regardless of its source or physical location. |

Year 2: Summary | The Faculty of Applied Science, Student Services, Library and ITServices successfully collaborated to create the MyUBC web-based 'portal system' where students can access individually relevant information related to their learning experience at UBC. This project, funded in part through a TLEF Grant, establishes the basic technology infrastructure that links information from a variety of sources into a single integrated system and allows the full integration of information technology with instruction at UBC. Available to 1st year UBC students as of September 2000, MyUBC provides a unique calendar system that presents information related to their course times and locations as well as other time sensitive information. Students also have access to email via any browser-enabled workstation, and can customize their interaction with the portal to receive information from the library, student services and other pilot content providers. Based on the success of the MyUBC project, this application seeks further funding to move the project towards the second phase of development that includes, implementing the MyCourses portion that integrates course management tools, completing the development of the links with the library and extending the implementation of the MyUBC portal across the campus to all students. |
