Undergraduate Plagiarism Curriculum Project

The UBC Library, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and the UBC Writing Centre, seeks to develop a curriculum to educate students about plagiarism, and provide them with both conceptual knowledge and practical skills for creating original research. This curriculum will be developed into both an online tutorial and a workshop to be delivered in select, high-enrollment courses within the Faculty of Arts. Upon completion of the tutorial, students will be able to:

• Define plagiarism and describe UBC’s general policies related to it;
• Differentiate between work that was original, plagiarized, paraphrased, and properly quoted;
• Employ various research techniques that will reduce the likelihood of unintentional plagiarism;
• Properly cite their sources using the documentation style required for their research assignments; and
• Use online tools such as TurnItIn.com to evaluate the originality of their own work.
