Project Summary

Phys 253, Introduction to Instrument Design was offered for the first time in 2001. It was conceived to provide junior Engineering Physics students with a fun yet rigorous experience in practical hands-on design before they are exposed to all the theoretical principles upon which their designs are built. Based on the effort and enthusiasm exerted by the students during the course, on the feedback from the students after they recovered, and on feedback from parents of the students who attended the final exam (a robot competition) and subsequent Bar BQ, the course could not have been more successful (elaboration is provided below). The objective of the present project is to ensure that the huge momentum established during this first offering is maintained in the future. Although wildly successful, the course required a Herculean effort on the part of Dr. Andre Marziali and the three teaching assistants. It also drew heavily on resources in Dr. Marziali's research laboratory. By obtaining the additional items specified below, it will be possible to improve the effectiveness of the course while reducing the time spent by the instructors. The rationale is very simple: this is an unbelievably successful new course that needs a minor infusion of money to ensure its future success.
