Year 1: Summary

Objectives: The goal of this project is to create an Electronic Education Library (EEL), a web portal designed to be the main repository of web-based educational resources for students. Initially, EEL will focus on dental education in order to develop a prototype that other UBC Faculties can consider. We will design and develop web-based tools for the submission and management of learning objects by educators, the navigation and searching of content by students, the creation of custom libraries enabling instructors to provide selected study materials to specific groups of students, and the creation of private libraries.

Rationale: Dental students state that obtaining quality educational material using standard Internet search engines requires a significant amount of time to determine whether the web pages returned contain valuable information. EEL will help the Faculty support lifelong and independent learning by allowing instructors to create custom course selections and supporting materials, which students can add to their own private libraries, enabling them to continue using EEL even after they graduate from UBC.

Year 2: Summary

Objectives: EEL provides a dynamic resource of educational materials that are submitted by content providers for students. It allows students to navigate categories of topics or use a search mechanism to find web-based educational materials to support their course material and learning objectives. The EEL prototype, funded by TLEF, implemented the category-based navigation and search functionality for the library, and provided the tools to allow educational materials to be added and maintained in the library. The objective for further funding of EEL is to extend it beyond a prototype and move it to a fully functioning system that supports customized libraries, allows content in other subject areas to be added and integrates with Dentistry’s Intranet, and UBC’s CWL and WebCT.

Rationale: EEL responds to the challenge of finding quality educational material using Internet search engines or other lists. With EEL, users will spend less time searching, and more time learning from the content. Users will not waste time determining the quality and value of the items returned from a search.
