Project Summary

This project is designed to provide an innovation in the orientation program for arts students and increase and expand their sense of purpose and commitment to their course work.

Objectives: To foster a greater sense of community and connection for first-year Arts students through Imagine UBC orientation and transition into UBC. Expand Imagine UBC in an innovative way for Arts students. Students will develop leadership skills, build meaningful relationships, learn about themselves, and understand an important issue from an academic and community perspective. In the first year, our goal is to develop successful community service learning pilot projects with first-year Arts students.

Rationale: Imagine UBC 2003 is an orientation and transition-in program committed to meaningfully serving new UBC students, especially commuter students, beyond the focus on Imagine Day. Arts students have not been as involved in Imagine as Squad Leaders or MUG Leaders (three times as many Science students apply for MUG Leader positions compared to Arts students). Arts students have commented that Imagine needs to better meet their interests and this would result in increased involvement in Imagine UBC. Many students are involved in the changing curriculum in high schools that focuses on citizenship development. Orientation programs are developing in this manner across the US, and we believe this would be an innovative development for the Imagine UBC program at UBC. This effort responds to the TREK 2000 goals to introduce community-based education and foster global citizenship.
